MICHAEL J. GRAY
MICHAEL J. GRAY
Founder and Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Gray has spent his 33-year career in the development, distribution and sales of scientific instrumentation for advanced research and development.
He began by developing and promoting electron microscopy solutions for materials science in the 1980’s. In the early 1990’s, semiconductor manufacturers adopted electron beams into manufacturing, and Michael was swept into high-volume semiconductor manufacturing for the next dozen years, where he developed expert knowledge in all three phases of manufacturing: Materials (wafer-making), Front End (IC Fab) and Back End (Assembly/Test).
Coming back to his roots in analytical science, he entered the world of portable instrumentation, i.e. Scientific Instrumentation embedded with powerful algorithms which allow for non-technical personnel to get accurate answers.
Recognizing the need for a simple and accurate instrument for the detection and quantification of orthophthalates in polymers, Michael and his associates founded Actus Analytical. Inc. and began development, under a federal government Small Business Innovation Research grant, of an algorithm for automatic detection and quantification of orthophthalates by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Actus successfully completed a 3-year research program in 2018, published a specification, and developed the instrumentation for sale.
Actus also applies its expertise to deployment of chemometric-based X-Ray Florescence (XRF) Spectroscopy for heavy metal detection/quantification, and High-Pressure Mass Spectrometry (HP MS) for the detection illicit drugs at trace levels, i.e. “street-cut” drugs.

DECLAN J. GRAY
DECLAN J. GRAY
Sales Engineer
Declan began working with Actus Analytical in 2015.
His work began while a full-time student during Actus Analytical’s Research partnership with CPSC as an Applications Engineer. Dividing his time between school, work and being an NCAA student-athlete and captain of his NCAA wrestling team.
Declan was trained by chemist Robert Brush on the Actus/Agilent 4500a FTIR and aided in preparing instruments and collecting samples for the Consumer Product Safety Commission during the development of Actus Analytical’s ortho-phthalate calibration.
Upon graduating from CUNY Hunter College with two Bachelor’s Degrees, Declan joined the company full time under the title of Sales Engineer. He now uses the knowledge he gained about the instrument and the chemistry behind it in his role in Sales.
Declan is leading the company effort to advance calibrations for the Actus/Agilent 4500a FTIR. This includes standards development, managing outside technical resources and most importantly, customer interface and support.
